The Traditional Celtic Woods

"Nine Woods in the Cauldron go,  Burn them fast and burn them Slow"

The above words are taken from the Wiccan Rede. These words became my inspiration for the types of woods that I decided to use for my wand crafting.

I also considered the woods that are used in the Celtic Ogham tree alphabet. My desire is to use the same woods that history tells us the ancient Druids were most likely to have used in their ceremonies.

The woods that I currently use for my wands are those which I find in and around the area of Avalon and include the following,

  • Birch
  • Rowan
  • Alder
  • Willow
  • Ash
  • Hawthorn
  • Oak
  • Holly
  • Hazel
  • Apple
  • Blackthorn
  • Gorse
  • Broom
  • Elder

The Berries of Blackthorn also known as Sloe is a popular wood used to make wands.
